KSHH presents findings on "Golden passports": EU citizenship is not

The Albanian Committee of Helsinki (KSHH) has presented the findings of the latest report on "Golden Passports".

KSHH emphasized that EU citizenship is not for sale, as it is considered a sensitive issue, related to immigration and the fight against organized crime.

"Albania has done the right thing, there is a procedure before the Court that will decide on the issue of the left. It is in the hands of legal experts, we are waiting for the decision, but it is also in the hands of the government, for market passports. It has a legal but also a political part. EU citizenship is a sensitive issue, it has to do with migration and the fight against organized crime. EU membership requires responsibility, the passport is one of the ways. If we can say it brutally openly, EU citizenship is not for sale" , said KSHH.

The French ambassador in Tirana, Elisabeth Barsak, estimated that Albanian citizens have the right to know why the government's draft law on "golden passports" has been suspended. Barsak said that these are technical issues that need to be discussed, especially in the case of passports.

"Nothing is technical, everything is political. 'The devil is in the details'. There are some technical issues that need to be discussed. Especially those related to golden passports. In my country there is a cooperation with the public sector, the way it is operated is very transparent. These topics are important, the first one is suspended but it is very risky. Albanian citizens have the right to know why it is suspended and why it is important to be off the Moneyval gray list ," said the French ambassador.
