Vajgurore Bridge Massacre, SPAK seeks life imprisonment for Fran Marashi

The Special Prosecution has requested a life sentence for Fran Marashi, accused of the "Vajgurore Bridge Massacre", where 5 police officers lost their lives.

The Supreme Court had decided to retry the case 28 years after the event.

Following his arrest and extradition, Fran Marashi claimed that his fundamental rights and freedoms for a fair legal process were not respected during the trial in absentia. He stated that he was unaware of the trial that took place in 1999-2000 in his charge.

“Nobody notified me, neither the prosecution nor the court,” Marashi said during his arguments. He requested that the case be reopened and retried in accordance with the standards of justice.

In 1997, the event known as the “Vajgurore Bridge Massacre” shocked the country, where 5 police officers were killed and 6 others were injured. After many years, justice is struggling to fully clarify this tragic event and ensure a fair trial for all accused.
