Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with Archbishop Ioan to congratulate him on his election as head of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.

Through a post on "X", Mitsotakis writes that the Church of Albania is a point of unity and mutual understanding between the two peoples.

"I contacted His Beatitude Archbishop Ioannis of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania and congratulated him on his election.

"Our shared belief is that the Church of Albania is a point of unity and mutual understanding between the two peoples. We will continue to work towards this goal, honoring the memory and work of Blessed Anastasios ," Mitsotakis said.

The election of Archbishop Joan was made by the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church, after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, March 16, which for Orthodox believers coincides with the second Sunday of Lent.

His Grace Joan was welcomed with a special ceremony and entered the "Ngjava e Christi" Cathedral, while its bells and those of all Orthodox churches in Albania rang simultaneously in honor of this historic moment.

After the announcement of his name, the new Archbishop gave a short speech, which was received by dozens of believers present with applause and shouts of "worthy."

"With humility, in obedience to the divine will, I accept this high service and promise to carry out my duty with devotion. I will respect sacred tradition and will strive with all my might to defend the rights of the Church. Aware of the weight of this responsibility, I pray to Christ to give me enlightenment, strength and wisdom to fulfill this mission. With my own hand I sign this pledge," said Bishop Joan.
