End of registration deadline for diaspora vote, VOA: No chance for review of

At least 232,000 Albanians living abroad will have the opportunity to vote in the parliamentary elections on May 11 this year. Although the deadline for registration applications closed at midnight last night, this number is expected to increase further, as by Wednesday morning there were still over 19,000 applications in the review phase. Yesterday alone, there were over 13,200 new applicants.

No chance to review over 42 thousand rejected applications, due to errors in the registration phase or incomplete documentation. A proposal to extend the registration deadline was rejected yesterday afternoon in the Regulatory Commission, while the idea put forward by the Chief Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi to see the possibility of leaving space to handle rejections, did not find support. Raised as an issue and at the meeting of the Regulatory Commission by one of the members, the idea was not put to a vote.

The registration of voters from abroad exceeded the initial expectations of both the Central Election Commission and the political parties themselves. The latter seem to have contributed significantly to the process, engaging in numerous meetings with the diaspora community in various countries, especially in Italy and Greece where the majority of immigrants live. This is also evidenced by the registration figures to participate in the elections, where 60 percent are precisely from these two countries with 149 thousand approved requests, of which 86.5 thousand are from Italy and 62.5 thousand from Greece. In third place with over 24 thousand requests are immigrants from Germany, followed by over 20 thousand from the United States. In total, requests to participate in the elections have come from over 100 countries.

According to legal provisions, the vote of migrants will be counted in the district where they have their residence in Albania. Nearly 49.5 thousand registered voters belong to Tirana, followed by Fier with over 30 thousand voters from abroad and Durrës and Elbasan with over 23.5 thousand. By March 9, the Central Election Commission is expected to publish the preliminary list of these voters. Their names will then be removed from the voter list in Albania.

Those registered have gained the right to participate in the elections, but are not obliged to exercise this right, although in any case, the ballot will be sent to their homes. A process that will begin from the moment of its approval. March 12, for participating parties and coalitions, is the deadline for submitting lists of candidates who will be included in the race.

However, the current registration figures show that the migrant vote can have a significant impact, especially in districts where the last mandate between the parties was divided in the past, with a narrow margin of votes. A phenomenon seen mainly in some small districts, but also in those with many deputies, as in the case of Fier. /VOA/
