The British government moves asylum seekers to the military zone, among them

Britain began relocating some migrants today, placing them on floating platforms off its southern coast as part of plans to save money by removing the option of sending migrants arriving in Britain by small boats to hotels.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made cracking down on illegal immigration a top priority of his government ahead of next year's general election. The opposition Labor Party currently enjoys a strong lead in opinion polls.

In a bid to prevent foreign nationals from entering Britain without documents, the government is moving migrants into disused military sites as well as three-storey gray floating buildings in Portland, which can house around 500 people in more than 200 rooms sleep.

The decision has divided local communities, with some describing the housing conditions for citizens coming from countries such as Iraq, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, or Albania as inhumane.

Others are angered by the impact on local services and are concerned that places where migrants will be housed will become targets for protests.

A person with knowledge of the situation said the first migrants had started arriving at the floating platform building around noon today, with others expected to arrive later in the day.

More than 50,000 asylum seekers are living in hotels in Britain after making the final leg of their journey on dinghies from France. The government says the hotels cost $7.6 million a day.

The Home Secretary, Sarah Dines, told Sky News television that sending migrants to military zones sends a message that Britain will provide "proper, but not luxurious, accommodation" for illegal arrivals./ VOA
