Albania is positioned among the 5 countries with the highest decline in life expectancy in Europe, taking into account the change in life expectancy from 2020-2021.

According to the data of the European Statistics Agency, processed by SCAN Intel , Albania is positioned between Latvia, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Montenegro, as the countries with the highest decrease in life expectancy by 1.9 years.

The mortality rate for our country and the impact of the pandemic have left more visible marks than in other countries.

The data shows that a child born in 2021, based on current mortality rates, is expected to live about 75.5 years. Compared to 2020, life expectancy at birth for Albania has dropped from 77.4 years to 75.5 years.

The European Union average for 2021 is 80.1 years. The countries with the longest life expectancy at birth are Liechtenstein with 84.4 years, Switzerland and Spain with 83.9 years and 83.3 years.

In relation to the countries of the Balkan region, Albania is better positioned. The weakest figure was recorded by Serbia with 72.8 years, North Macedonia with 73.2 years and Montenegro with 73.8 years. Bulgaria and Romania are the two countries that register the lowest life expectancy at birth with 71.4 years and 72.8 years.

Based on gender, life expectancy at birth in Albania in 2021 has decreased for both men and women. Men in Albania are expected to live 73.5 years, while women are expected to live 77.7 years.
