The Guardian 'slaps' Serbia: They used fascist slogans against Albanians, FIFA tolerated the insults
"Serbia supporters displayed fascist slogans and aimed racist chants at ethnic Albanians during their team's match against Switzerland on Friday night."
This is how the prestigious British "The Guardian" article begins, dedicated to the Serbia-Switzerland challenge played yesterday in Qatar.
"The Guardian" writes that yesterday's scenes at the stadium in Doha raise questions about FIFA's leadership and, in particular, its apparent tolerance for offensive signs. The article brings the confession of a witness who was present yesterday at the Serbia-Switzerland match.
The confrontation between the two teams was accompanied by tensions and clashes between the footballers, where the Serbs provoked several times. The captain of the Serbian national team pushed Granit Xhaka, which also brought the reaction of the Swiss team. The Serbian bench got ready to go to the field, but the referee punished one of them and asked them not to interfere.
"The Guardian" article:
Hasan Rrahmani arrived at the match with an Albanian flag around his neck, but says he had it confiscated at the entrance, while derogatory nationalist symbols were allowed through. He says he was shown a WhatsApp message FIFA had sent to security staff containing pictures of items, pictures and phrases that were not allowed.
"I was completely stunned when I saw the number of fascist slogans, t-shirts and flags," Rrahmani said. He showed the Observer photographic evidence of a supporter wearing a green hat closely associated with atrocities committed in the Kosovo and Bosnia wars, and said the man was part of a group wearing the same outfit. Among other items of clothing freely worn around the stadium, he says, were T-shirts that read "From Serbia to Tokyo," a nationalist slogan used by Serbian soccer fans during the wars of the 1990s. Rrahmani says the police were not interested in complaints about the items, or the three-finger gestures considered offensive in many contexts.
Xhaka could face an investigation into having his genitals ripped off the bench for Serbia, and other figures from both camps may fear censure. An Albania fan was seen being escorted out of the stadium during the second half after making the eagle gesture.
FIFA declined to comment on the prospects of disciplinary action or the issues described by Rrahmani.
