Breaking the 129-year-old taboo, the first Albanian mayor in New Jersey speaks:

The first Albanian mayor in the USA, Violetta Berisha, spoke for the first time after taking office in New Jersey.

For ABC News, Berisha has told how her involvement in American political life began. She said that her family left Albania in 1952 to avoid communism.

Berisha is the first woman mayor in 129 years since Fairway was declared a municipality.

"My work starts at 08:20. In Fairway, there are about 15 thousand residents. In politics he was in politics and he asked me to join the Council, and that's where it all started. I have been on the Council for 7 years. In 1952 my family escaped from Albania, my father was 6 years old and so they avoided communism and went to Italy. I was born there and then came here when I was 3 months old. At home we always spoke Albanian, but growing up, at school, it was easier for me to speak English. The name Violetta is not very common among Italians in America, but I told everyone that I am Albanian" , said Berisha.

Berisha emphasized that there are many Albanians in the city, there are about 50-60 Albanian families, adding that there was also a great support from them.

"I am very involved in the city, we have been here for about 30 years. My kids went to school here, grew up here, and once you get to know someone, there's no more politics involved. After you try to help people and that's what counts. The mandate lasts four years" , she said.
