Trump suspends aid funds, EU delegation reacts

The European Union reacts for the first time after the decision of United States President Donald Trump to suspend all foreign aid programs for a period of 90 days, including Albania.

In a reaction to Top Channel, the European Union emphasizes that it will continue its assistance to Albania, especially for justice reform.

The European Union emphasizes that it is foreseeing other important resources to support justice reform in Albania.

"The EU has been at the forefront of providing assistance for justice reform and is determined to continue supporting justice reform in Albania.

Since the justice system underwent a fundamental reform in 2016, the EU has significantly intensified this support. This included budget support and over €50 million in technical assistance, specifically targeting institution-building.

Other significant resources are foreseen to continue this support smoothly, including through the Growth and Reform Facility for the Western Balkans.

The role of SPAK and its independence in investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating complex corruption cases is of key importance. The EU has supported SPAK since its establishment through dedicated technical assistance under the EU4LEA and EU4 FOCAL projects with a total budget of over €8 million.

"SPAK has produced tangible results, contributing to Albania's overall efforts to establish a credible track record in the fight against serious crime, organized crime and corruption, including at high levels ," the EU response states.
