There are fewer forests in Albania. Illegal fires and logging on the one hand and non-planting of new plants on the other are shrinking the country's green surface year by year.
From over 1.1 million hectares until 2022, last year the space with pines, oaks, oaks or bushes was limited to less than 970 thousand hectares.
In the 18 percent decrease of the forest space, the fact that the area of the forest and pasture fund located within the protected areas has not been calculated has also had an impact.
Meanwhile, the data from INSTAT show that most of the forest area in the country consists of hardwoods, followed by shrubs and conifers.
Together with the shrinking of the surface, the volume of forests also decreases. From about 55 million cubic meters until 2022, during the last year the total volume of forests shrank to a little more than 53 million cubic meters.
The volume is the most significant indicator of the situation in the forests, which has been shrinking for years, as a result of indiscriminate exploitation, burning or illegal cutting of hundreds of thousands of hectares every year.
According to data from the General Prosecutor's Office, in the span of 2017-2023, 134 people were criminally prosecuted on the charge of intentionally setting fire to forests. On the other hand, the data from the Judicial District Courts show a very low number of convicted persons. Only 2 in the last 6 years!
