Parliamentary elections in Kosovo, EU demands maintenance of standards
Kosovo is holding general parliamentary elections on Sunday, the ninth in a row since the end of the war in 1999 and the first regular elections since the declaration of independence in 2008. Twenty-eight political forces are competing in these elections, including 20 political parties, five coalitions, two civic lists and one independent candidate.
For four years, the government was led by the Vetëvendosje party with Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who frequently clashed with Serbia within the framework of the dialogue facilitated by the European Union, and also had deep disagreements with the international community due to actions called "uncoordinated" in northern Kosovo.
In the February 9 elections, about two million voters are eligible to vote, of which 105 thousand citizens vote outside Kosovo. The CEC has announced that ballots have been printed with a total number of about 1.8 million ballots, a number smaller than the number of voters, due to the fact that in all previous elections, the turnout of citizens in the elections was not more than 50% of voters with the right to vote. The general elections are also held in the northern part of Kosovo, inhabited by a Serb majority, although their representatives boycotted the 2023 local elections. But this time, several small political entities, including the Srpska List, which is the largest party of Kosovo Serbs, are participating in the elections.
Political campaign with inciting and hate speech
For a month now, political entities aiming to lead the government for the next four-year term have been unveiling their election programs. Among the largest political entities competing in these elections are the Vetëvendosje Movement VV led by Albin Kurti, the Democratic League of Kosovo LDK led by Lumir Abdixhiku, the Democratic Party of Kosovo PDK with its candidate for prime minister Bedri Hamza, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo AAK led by Ramush Haradinaj.
During the month, the election campaign in Kosovo was marked by a considerable amount of inflammatory and hate speech, but no incidents were recorded. “The trend of using inflammatory or hate speech and language in the campaign has continued throughout, despite fines imposed by an ECAP election panel, precisely for such cases,” stated the DnV network of non-governmental organizations that monitors the election process.
BE vëzhgon zgjedhjet në Kosovë
Kosovo's Ministry of Transport says there is no request for additional bus transport from Serbia. Officials from this ministry say that institutions will not allow buses transporting organized voters to enter Kosovo on election day without being provided with a special permit in advance that coincides with the regular Kosovo-Serbia bus lines. /DW/
