Kosovo police arrest a suspect for smuggling goods from Serbia

Kosovo police said on Thursday that they have arrested a Serbian citizen suspected of smuggling goods from Serbia to Kosovo. In a media release, police said that Kosovo police and customs officials had spotted two vehicles with Serbian license plates being illegally driven from the southern Serbian village of Dobrosina into the southeastern Kosovo city of Gjilan on Thursday afternoon.

They then alerted other customs units in Graçanica to the arrival of two suspect vehicles, where the suspects did not comply with officials' orders to stop and, while one of them was apprehended, the other managed to escape, according to the release.

"The two vehicle drivers did not follow the orders of the customs officials who were in uniform and in an official car. It was managed to stop only one car with the suspect VB as the driver, aged 36, a citizen of Serbia. On the other hand, the other vehicle with suspect FM as the driver managed to escape in an unknown direction, causing several accidents", the announcement states.

The house of the arrested person in the Hajvali neighborhood in Pristina was checked by the security authorities, who found goods such as electrical equipment, of Serbian origin, which is suspected to have been smuggled into Kosovo, the police said.

The arrested suspect will be detained for 48 hours. Import of goods from Serbia is prohibited in Kosovo. In July 2023, the Government of Kosovo made a decision to ban the import of goods from Serbia, for "security" reasons, when three Kosovo policemen were arrested by the Serbian police./ REL
