Rashic confirms participation in the US discussions on the Association

The Minister for Communities and Return in the Government of Kosovo, Nenad Rashiq, confirmed that he received an invitation from the United States to participate in a discussion on January 31, for the formation of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority in Kosovo.

"I expect it to be a good meeting", Rashiq told Radio Free Europe.

He was appointed to the position of minister of the Government led by Albin Kurti last December, when Goran Rakić, from the ranks of the Serbian List, resigned, in opposition to the decision of the official Pristina to re-register cars with illegal Serbian license plates. in the north of Kosovo.

Rashiq said that his position is that the agreements cannot be ignored. In this context, he added, the recommendations of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo, from 2015, for the harmonization of the Association with the Constitution and laws of Kosovo, should also be analyzed.

The creation of this association was agreed upon in 2013, within the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, which takes place in Brussels.

Two years later, namely in 2015, the parties have agreed on the principles of the Association, but the Constitutional Court of Kosovo has subsequently found that some of them are not in accordance with the laws of Kosovo, although it has said that they can be harmonized.

The issue has become an obstacle for the further normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia. While Serbia insists on the formation of the Association, Kosovo refuses, on the grounds that it cannot create mono-ethnic associations, which would conflict with the Constitution of Kosovo.

The United States and the European Union have repeatedly requested that Kosovo respect the Association Agreement.

The US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, said in an interview for Radio Free Europe in December that, if the Government of Kosovo does not find a way to form the Association, the US will look for "partners alternative".
