Stoltenberg from Prishtina: Stability in the region is important for our security
The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, declared from Prishtina that the increase of the military presence in Kosovo by 1,000 troops shows how seriously the alliance takes the conflict that broke out in Kosovo in recent months.
In a press conference with the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, Stoltenberg said that stability in the Western Balkan region "is important for our security".
" In September we saw outbreaks of violence in northern Kosovo, which raised concerns about how a wider conflict could return to the Western Balkans. In May, KFOR troops were attacked, leaving 93 NATO soldiers seriously injured and some scarred for life. Such violent attacks are unacceptable, the perpetrators of the attack must be held responsible", the NATO secretary emphasized.
He added that NATO will implement the mandate of its mission in Kosovo, KFOR, to provide environment and movement for all communities.
He also welcomed the new draft statute for the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.
The establishment of the Association "would be a key step towards the normalization of relations and towards sustainable peace in the region ", said Stoltenberg.
