The Friends actor reveals the strange reason why he once ended his romance with Julia Roberts

Matthew Perry revealed the details of his secret relationship with Julia Roberts in his new memoir Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing. They first met after the Pretty Woman actress agreed to appear on Friends only if her character could have a storyline together with Chandler Bing. The series co-creator then encouraged Perry to talk to him, which unexpectedly led to sparks between the two artists.

"I had to woo her. I wanted something a little flirty. I sent her three dozen red roses and the envelope said, 'The only thing more exciting than being able to do the show is finally having an excuse to send you flowers.' ", he said. "Her response was that if I explained quantum physics to her in the right way, she would agree to be on the show."

Perry confessed that the next day he sent her a research paper about "wave-particle duality and entanglement," which was apparently enough to convince the actress to agree to be on the hit sitcom.

Reflecting on the early days of their relationship, Perry noted that it was "before the Internet and before cell phones," so they mostly communicated via fax.

However, it was Perry's inner demons that stopped their relationship from truly blossoming. He admitted that "dating Julia Roberts had been too much" for him, leading to lingering fears that she would end their whirlwind romance.

"I could never get enough; I was broken, bent, unloved. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts," he continued. "I can't begin to describe the look of confusion on her face."

And so ended a budding romance!
