He was arrested on suspicion of war crimes, Serbia releases the citizen from Kosovo
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora announced that Serbia has released from custody the Kosovar Sadik Duraku, who was arrested earlier this year on suspicion of war crimes in 1999.
Duraku, a citizen of Great Britain and Kosovo, was arrested on April 17 at the Croatia-Serbia border crossing in Batrovci.
The Serbian authorities suspected that he had committed the crime of "war crime against the civilian population".
According to Serbia, it was suspected that Durak "together with unknown persons, during 1999, in the area of the municipality of Gjakova, Prizren and Peja, as a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army, physically beat, mentally harassed and robbed the civilian population ".
His lawyer had earlier told Radio Free Europe that Duraku, a citizen of Great Britain, had been in this country since December 1998 and had not returned to Kosovo until 2004.
His family also told REL that Duraku had lived in Great Britain before the war in Kosovo started.
Other citizens of Kosovo are also in custody in Serbia, under charges of war crimes: Nezir Mehmetaj, Hasan Dakaj and Tefik Mustafa. Meanwhile, a few days ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed that MI, detained in Serbia on suspicion of war crimes, is a citizen of Kosovo.
The Kosovo authorities have sent a request to Serbia to extradite to Kosovo the Kosovar citizens who are being held by the Serbian authorities. However, the Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, stated in July of this year that she does not expect Serbia to respond positively to this request./REL
