Americans think the US is headed for chaos after the assassination of Donald

Americans fear their country is slipping into chaos after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, a poll conducted by news agency Reuters and research company Ipsos revealed. Trump, who will run in November's presidential election against incumbent Joe Biden, was injured during a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

The two-day poll found he enjoys a slight lead among registered voters, with 43 percent support, compared to Biden's 41 percent. But, 80 percent of voters - including Democrats and Republicans - said they agree with the statement that "the country is getting out of control."

About 84 percent of them expressed concern that extremists will commit acts of violence even after the elections. This figure is on the rise when compared to the result of a Reuters and Ipsos poll conducted in May, which showed that 74 percent of voters had this concern.

Fears of political violence in the US grew after some Trump supporters attacked the US Congress building on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to overturn the result of the 2020 election, in which Trump was defeated by Biden.

Four people lost their lives on the day of the attack, while a police officer who fought against the rebels died the next day./REL
