Covid-19 / German President: The worst of the pandemic is over

The pandemic has cast a dark shadow over Christmas celebrations in Germany, but after living with the coronavirus for almost a year, we have "every reason to believe" that life will get better very soon, said German President Frank Walter Steinmeier.

"We still have a long and arduous road ahead of us," Steinmeier said in a Christmas Day speech.

"But we see that the long-awaited light at the end of the tunnel is increasing. "We are approaching the end of the crisis, step by step," he said, referring to the launch of the vaccination campaign on Sunday in Germany.

The Germans have marked many traditions this year under isolation measures, ranging from the cancellation of Christmas markets to limiting the number of events with friends and family.

Steinmeier, who has been in charge of the German presidency since March 2017, has described the coronavirus crisis with social and personal consequences.

"A small virus has taken our lives and our thinking hostage, shattered our plans and shattered our dreams," said the 64-year-old, adding that the pandemic reminded us how fragile we humans are, and how delicate it is. which we call 'normal life' ".

He has taken the opportunity to mention a German minority who have held protests against coronavirus restrictions and disseminated unfounded theories about its origins.

He said people who have denied the risk of the virus have often gained attention "but the conscious are the majority".

And according to him, this is good news this year./REL
