A series of diplomatic victories, such as an agreement to resume Ukraine's grain exports, have buoyed Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from Turkey's economic crisis and provide a blueprint for his campaign strategy for next year's elections.
As he prepares for what is shaping up to be the biggest electoral challenge of his nearly 20-year administration, the president is playing up his achievements on the global stage.
"Turkey is going through its strongest period politically, militarily and diplomatically," he told a crowd of thousands in northwestern Turkey at the weekend, a day after holding talks in Russia with President Vladimir Putin.
Foreign media reports that the key to Erdogan's diplomacy in the Middle East and beyond is what he called his "common understanding, based on trust and mutual respect" with Putin, a relationship that is causing growing concern among his partners. Turkey's NATO since Russia invaded Ukraine.
Russia says it is conducting a "special military operation" to liberate Ukraine from nationalists and protect Russian-speaking communities.
Turkey has sought to strike a balance by criticizing the Russian invasion and providing arms to Ukraine while refusing to join the West in imposing sanctions on Russia, a stance it says has helped its mediation efforts reap results. .
