Germany sends 4,000 AI-controlled attack drones to Ukraine

Germany announced on Monday that it was sending 4,000 AI-controlled attack drones to Ukraine, days after Kiev criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that the package marks "a big step for the Ukrainians, because they are controlled by AI and can disable the electronic defense of the enemy", writes CNN

The drones, manufactured by the German company Helsing, "can reach targets up to 30-40 kilometers inland, especially command posts and logistics centers," Pistorius added.

The decision comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rebuked Scholz for calling Putin to end the war in Ukraine, ending a concerted European effort to isolate the Russian leader.

Although the drones are referred to as "Mini-Taurus", Germany is standing firm in its refusal to send Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

On Sunday, the Biden administration gave Kiev permission to strike targets deep inside Russia with US-made weapons, ending its years-long opposition to the move.
