Greece paralyzed by nationwide strike, workers demand wage increases

Athens, Thessaloniki and other cities in Greece have been paralyzed since this morning, as a result of a 24-hour nationwide strike called by the General Confederation of the Private Sector (GSEE) and the General Confederation of Public Administration (ADEDY).

The strike has broadly involved federations, unions and associations from the private and public sectors, which are demanding wage increases, the restoration of the 13th and 14th wages, as well as the restoration of the collective labor contract.

Participants also protest against rising prices, inflation and the housing crisis that has affected the wider sections of the population.

Public transport has been suspended almost completely. Ships will remain anchored in ports, while the cancellation of almost all flights from Greek airports - including those to and from Albania - has been announced. The authorities have clarified that only essential flights will be allowed.

The strike has also involved teachers, lecturers and students, who have come out in protests over the level of education, the economic insecurity of schools and opposition to the privatization of universities.

According to the Greek authorities, 6 people have been arrested in connection with the protests so far.
