Dutch artist Joost Klein has been disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest after an incident backstage.

The performer was sent home after "behaving inappropriately" towards a female member of the production. It is not known exactly what it is about.

In a statement, pageant organizers said it "would not be appropriate for him to continue in the competition" while the legal process unfolds.

Klein had been among the favorites to win this year's contest with his song, Europapa. A pro-European techno anthem, it was dedicated to his father, who he lost to cancer at the age of 12.

News of his suspension broke on Friday afternoon during the first dress rehearsal for Saturday's televised grand final.
