China retaliates against Trump's tariffs

China will impose tariffs worth 84 percent on US goods and these measures will take effect on April 10, the Chinese Ministry of Finance said, further escalating the trade war between the world's two largest economies.

The announcement from China comes on the day that tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on imports from several countries, including China, took effect. Washington has imposed a 104 percent tariff on Chinese goods.

Trump's tariffs, which have hit most countries in the world with a base tariff of 10 percent and higher tariffs on major trading partners, have rattled global markets and raised fears of a recession.

Trump increased tariffs on Chinese imports in response to countermeasures taken by Beijing.

Earlier in the day, China warned that it would continue to take new measures if Trump continued to hit Chinese goods.

Beijing has also told the World Trade Organization that US tariffs threaten to destabilize global trade.

"The situation has escalated dangerously... As one of the affected members, China expresses deep concern and strong opposition to this reckless move," China said in a statement sent to the organization.

On April 2, when he announced the tariffs, Trump said that for decades his country had been treated unfairly by "friends and foes alike" on trade issues, creating a huge trade imbalance./ REL
