Italian Foreign Minister: The agreement with Albania cannot be compared with the

The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, while speaking about the refugee agreement with Albania, said that it cannot be compared to the British plan for the deportation of illegal immigrants to Rwanda.

Tajani said that immigrants will be treated according to the protocol of Italian and European standards.

"Immigrants will be treated according to Italian and European standards. This Protocol is not comparable to the agreement between the United Kingdom and Rwanda ," said Tajani.

Italy will build two reception and detention camps in Albania, which will house a maximum of 3,000 migrants at any one time, marking the first ever agreement involving a non-EU country accepting migrants on behalf of a member state.

Tajani said Italy would bear all costs, including building and policing the centers, and would pay 16.5 million euros ($18.00 million) in initial costs.

Tajani said the administration would present a bill to officially ratify the pact with Albania.

"We hope it can be adopted in a time frame that is consistent with the urgency of dealing with the management of growing migration flows," he said.

About 150,000 seafarers have arrived in Italy so far this year, compared with about 94,000 in the same period in 2022.
