"Shameful vaccination rate", Austria on the verge of putting millions

Austria is a few days away from the order that will affect millions of unvaccinated people who will have to stay home, CNN reports .

Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg told reporters that the country’s vaccination rate was “shamefully low” and hinted that the measure would begin within days. "In other countries this rate is much higher - it is a shame because we have so many vaccines available," Schallenberg added.

Under the country plan, which was agreed in September, unvaccinated Austrians will face a stay-at-home warrant after 30% of intensive care beds are occupied by patients with Covid-19.

The current rate is 21%, according to the Austrian Agency for Health and Safety (AGES), and an increase in infections has pushed it rapidly.

Unvaccinated people are already excluded from entertainment venues, restaurants and other parts of public life in Austria.

About 65% of Austria's population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, one of the lowest rates in the European Union.

"It is clear that this winter will be unpleasant for the unvaccinated," Schallenberg warned, adding that "the blockade may come much sooner than some may think."
