Trump thinks Zelensky is ready to give up Crimea

US President Donald Trump has said he thinks Volodymyr is ready to give up Crimea, despite previous claims by his Ukrainian counterpart about the Black Sea peninsula that was annexed by Russia in 2014, as The Guardian reports.

Speaking to reporters at a New Jersey airport on Sunday, a day after meeting with Zelenskyy at the Vatican, Trump said "Oh, I think so," in response to a question about whether he thought Zelenskyy was ready to give up the territory.

Zelensky said last week that Ukraine could not accept U.S. recognition of Russia's annexation of Crimea, after Trump accused him of being stubborn on the issue. Zelenskyy insisted on Friday that the territory was "the property of the Ukrainian people." He did not immediately respond to Trump's latest comments.

The US is proposing that Moscow keep the territory it has occupied, including the strategic Crimean peninsula.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Sunday that the US proposal for Ukraine to cede territory to Russia was "akin to a capitulation."

In an interview with broadcaster ARD, he said Kiev knew that a peace deal could include territorial concessions.

"But these certainly won't go as far as they do in the latest proposal from the US president," Pistorius said. "Ukraine itself could have received a year ago what was included in that Trump proposal, it's akin to a capitulation. I can't see any added value," he said.
