Trump doubts Putin's desire for peace

After a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump suddenly began using a harsher tone towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. On his online platform Truth Social, Trump threatened Russia with sanctions yesterday.

Recent Russian missile strikes on civilian areas in Ukraine led him to believe that the Kremlin boss was not interested in ending the war. Trump wrote that many people are dying and "this makes me think that maybe he doesn't want to end the war at all, but just wants to keep me around. Also, should he be dealt with differently, e.g. in the 'banking sector' or with 'secondary sanctions'?"

Zelensky: Symbolic meeting

Trump and Zelensky met in Rome during the funeral services for Pope Francis. The White House called the meeting "very productive." Zelensky also called the meeting symbolic and spoke positively after it.

"We had the opportunity to discuss it face to face. We hope for an outcome from the things we discussed." These included protecting the lives of the Ukrainian population, "a complete and unconditional ceasefire" and "a credible and lasting peace."

The conversation reportedly lasted about 15 minutes. The Ukrainian president had previously announced in a video message that he would hold several more meetings in Rome aimed at leading to a ceasefire./ DW
