Why did Kim Jong Un cry in front of North Korean women?

Kim Jong-un has been filmed crying as he urges North Korean women to have more children and raise them to love the authoritarian state.

The North Korean leader was seen wiping his eyes with a white handkerchief as he addressed thousands of women gathered at a national meeting of mothers in Pyongyang.

Many in the audience wept alongside him during the carefully choreographed event, the first of its kind to be held in 11 years, amid growing concerns about a falling birth rate in the isolated state.

"Stopping the decline in birth rates and providing good care and education to children are all our family issues that we must solve together with our mothers," Kim said.

South Korea has estimated that the birth rate in North Korea has been declining over the past decade. The United Nations Population Fund says North Korea's fertility rate stands at 1.8 births per woman as of 2023, below the standard rate of 2.1 in developed countries.

North Korea is heavily dependent on manual labor to keep its economy afloat amid isolated trade links with the West due to sanctions.
