Only 49 days in power, Truss: Never gave me a real chance to pass tax cuts

Liz Truss has said she was never given a "real chance" to implement her radical tax-cutting agenda by her party.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Truss stood by her plans to boost economic growth, arguing they were undermined by "left-wing economic stability".

These are the first public comments that the former prime minister has made about her resignation. But she said that she was not "innocent" for the breakdown of the mini-budget.

Truss was forced to resign after the £45bn package of unfunded tax cuts sent the pound to a record low.

Her short time in power - 49 days - made her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.

She believes that in the medium term her policies would have increased growth and therefore reduced debt. He also argued that the government became a "scapegoat" for developments that had been brewing for some time.

She also said she had underestimated the strength of the resistance she would face to her plans - including plans to scrap the top 45p rate of income tax.

"I assumed on entering Downing Street that my mandate would be respected and accepted. How wrong I was. While I expected resistance to my program from the system, I underestimated its extent," she writes.
