University rejects demands/Trump freezes $2 billion in Harvard funds

The elite Harvard University is refusing to implement the course change demanded by President Donald Trump, such as in the admission of students to the university. A letter from the university's president Alan Garber states that "no government - regardless of which party is in power - should dictate what private universities can offer as education, who they can admit and hire, and what fields of study and research they can pursue." Harvard University will not give up its independence and constitutional rights.

Garber further stated that freedom of thought and scientific inquiry, as well as the government's longstanding commitment to respecting and protecting these freedoms, have enabled universities to contribute decisively to a free society.

This has financial consequences for the university. The US administration under Trump reacted immediately and announced that it will now cut federal funding of 2.2 billion US dollars (about 2 billion euros) for the world-renowned university. Funds from existing contracts amounting to 60 million US dollars (about 53 million euros) will also be frozen.

The move was cited as a possible disregard for civil rights and insufficient efforts to combat anti-Semitism at the renowned university. A statement from the US Department of Education said, "Today's statement by Harvard reinforces the disturbing entitlement mentality that has spread to our nation's most prestigious universities and colleges."

What has the US government asked Harvard for?

The Trump administration had asked the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based university in a letter on Friday to make changes and meet certain obligations. The government's request required the university to report foreign students to federal authorities in case of violations of the rules of conduct. To consider the diversity of attitudes among students and staff of the university.

End student admissions and staff recruitment based on diversity criteria. The diversity program was established to combat historical disadvantages that had existed, for example, against people of color or women./DW
