Brussels warns Belgrade: If you participate in Moscow parade, forget about the

Serbia's EU membership process has been thrown into doubt after a stern warning from Brussels. European officials have called on Belgrade to stay away from the May 9 Victory Parade in Moscow, reminding Belgrade that participating in the event would be incompatible with the country's European aspirations.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has said he has spoken personally with Russian President Vladimir Putin and plans to attend the parade, openly defying Brussels' stance. The statement comes at a time when Vučić faces massive protests at home and has been accused of growing closer to the Kremlin.

Meanwhile, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has also confirmed his presence at the parade, joining other European leaders who are challenging the official EU line. On the other hand, the office of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban—another figure known for his Eurosceptic approach—has stated that he will not participate in the parade.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been present in previous years, is not expected to attend this year, as he has scheduled an official visit to Washington in early May.

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, denied media reports suggesting a possibility of his presence in Moscow, stressing that he will not be part of the event that takes place just a day after Europe Day, when the continent celebrates the end of World War II.

The leaders' participation in the Victory Parade in Moscow this year is seen as a political statement more than a historical homage, reflecting the deepening divisions among European countries and the continuing impact of the war in Ukraine on international diplomacy.
