The death of the opponent, Erdogan: We will continue to fight FETO until it

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that Turkey is committed to pursuing suspected followers of late cleric Fethullah Gulen.

"We will continue to fight FETO until it disappears completely," Erdogan told members of his party, using the official acronym for Gulen's group.

The Turkish government considers Gulen's Hizmet movement to be terrorist. Erdogan has described Gulen as a "traitor". Ankara blames Gulen's network for orchestrating the failed coup in Turkey in 2016, and has since arrested suspected supporters of the group.

Gulen, who had lived in the United States since 1999, died in a hospital in Pennsylvania on Sunday evening, his movement announced on Monday. Gulen was an ally of Erdogan until 2013. Gulen himself denied involvement in the coup attempt and accused Erdogan of having orchestrated those developments himself.

On July 15, 2016, a faction of the Turkish army attempted a coup against the Erdogan Government. The efforts have failed and more than 250 people have died and over 2,000 have been injured. Under a state of emergency, Erdogan's government has fired more than 100,000 civil servants and arrested tens of thousands of suspected Gulen supporters. Observers expect that Gulen's movement will disintegrate after a while, after the death of its leader./ REL
