Diaspora patronage, Tabaku: This scheme will not work abroad
Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, spoke about the issue of the diaspora vote.
In a live broadcast to Syri TV, Tabaku accused the majority of lacking political will, calling it the main cause of delays in enabling the diaspora vote and the risks in its implementation.
Tabaku emphasized that the opposition has taken concrete steps, including submitting a legal proposal, to advance this democratic right.
"Damian Gjiknuri should be the last person to say and find justifications for the diaspora vote, because if today this issue has been postponed to this extreme deadline and with a risk to its implementation, this is the result of the lack of political will of the majority.
We have postponed the issue of the diaspora vote in every possible way and, when we saw that the majority had no will, we submitted a legal proposal. I am one of the MPs who signed it, along with 5 other opposition MPs, to take this issue to parliament.
The government, when it saw that this could backfire, took measures to formalize it.
As we speak, you are right: patronage has begun with the same system and scheme that operates here in Albania. With the same methodology and manner, embassies have been put into operation, forms are circulating, and the public administration is reporting who are the people they are taking over from the diaspora to vote.
I am sure that this scheme does not work with the diaspora, because one of the reasons why they have left is precisely the result of these schemes, of this patronage, of this established system.
"But it is unfortunate that even such an important element, such as the right to vote of the diaspora, is being used in this way," said Tabaku.
