The Serbian tennis player wins the case, the Australian court decides to release

An Australian court has decided to release Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic from immigration detention rooms, saying the government's decision to revoke his visa to enter the country was unreasonable.

Foreign media report that the court ordered Djokovic's release within 30 minutes and the return of his passport and other travel documents. Thus, the tennis player has the way to participate in the Australian Open competition.

However, federal government lawyers told the court that the country's immigration minister was reserving the right to exercise his personal power to revoke Djokovic's visa again.

Djokovic has been held in an immigration detention room with long-term asylum seekers since Thursday. He was allowed to attend his attorneys' rooms for the virtual hearings, but has not been seen in public since arriving in Australia.

His lawyers argued that a recent Covid-19 infection qualified Djokovic for medical exemption from a requirement that non-Australian citizens entering the country be vaccinated twice.
