Today marks 7 years since Mother Teresa's canonization. She was canonized by Pope Francis for her lifelong service and contribution to the poor and sick in Calcutta, India.

Mother Teresa has become an icon of the Catholic Church, for the dedication she showed in her mission. Pope Francis has raised the figure of Mother Teresa as a model for the openness with which she devoted herself to the poor.

Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje to Albanian parents and her name was Anjezë Bojaxhi. In 1929 she went to India as a nun of the Order of Loreto.

In 1946, she heard a divine call which invited her to dedicate herself to the poor, the forgotten and the abandoned.

In 1960 she founded the Missionaries of Charity organization, which became a worldwide order of nuns. They are identified by their white clothing with blue stripes.

In 1979, Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize. She died in 1997, in a poor house in Calcutta. While in 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa, paving the way for her canonization.
