Do social networks affect our health?

A new study from the University at Buffalo and Ohio State University has found a strong link between excessive social media use and poor physical health among college students.

Researchers measured levels of inflammation and symptoms of poor health in 251 students and found that those who used social media excessively had higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an indicator of chronic inflammation in the body.

Participants who used social media more also reported more somatic symptoms, such as headaches, chest pain, and back pain, and made more visits to doctors for treatment of these symptoms.

This study suggests that excessive use of social media can lead to reduced sleep quality and cause increased stress, which can negatively affect physical health, increasing the risk of heart disease and hypertension.

The researchers hope that this research will pave the way for more studies on the link between social media and physical health, including the potential impact of these platforms on users' health behaviors./ TAR
