"Express UK": How Albanian influencers are using Tik Tok to promote 'grass houses' in Britain
Social media networks helped fuel an influx of Albanian drug operatives into Britain, prompting influencers to promote a criminal lifestyle in the UK.
Our six-month investigation revealed that one of the country's most famous internet personalities, Alex Visha, rose to prominence through live online tours of UK cannabis farms and brazen bragging about his and his brother's criminal exploits. his, Dori.
Alex, the so-called "King of TikTok", claims in a clip obtained by the Express that he oversees a British drug empire that produces "1,200, 1,500 or 2,300 plants every two months". In another, he calls out his brother Dor Visha - who himself has over 100,000 followers - to celebrate a "harvest".
Former Home Secretary Priti Patel told the Express: “The British public will be disgusted by TikTok and Instagram allowing criminals to promote their lifestyles and encourage others to come to Britain illegally to manufacture drugs.
Material like this is wrong and social media companies must take responsibility to remove this content and work with our law enforcement agencies to quickly identify the people producing this content so they can be dealt with in full force of the law."
Albanian-language videos promoting UK drug farms have been posted on TikTok and Instagram for years. From digital wanted posters asking for information on thieves to clips of violent robberies, the extensive evidence gathered by the Express showed that networks are being used by gangs as a tool for crime.
The senior lecturer of the University of Essex, Dr. Alexandros K. Antoniou said the Express findings were another "disturbing" example of how social media was "facilitating" real-world crime.
The media law expert added that the revelation that two of Albania's most famous online figures had promoted a criminal lifestyle in the UK was a worrying development for the 'influencer' phenomenon - where ordinary people have achieved great success online through their social media accounts.
“They are individuals who became famous by cultivating an online following, and they do so because they cultivate trust. The trust then appears to be exploited in a way that encourages illegal or at least harmful activity,” he added.
Responding to the Express' findings, the National Crime Agency said it “pursues and disrupts the organized crime groups that pose the greatest risk to the UK's security and economy. We work with partners in the UK and around the world, including Albania, to understand the threat, identify the most harmful suspects and networks and ultimately protect the UK public from serious and serious crime. organized."
A Home Office spokesman said: “We expect technology companies to have robust processes in place to remove illegal content quickly. The Online Safety Act will introduce measures requiring platforms to identify and remove content related to the sale of drugs online.
"The UK and the Albanian authorities have a close working partnership and we take every opportunity to intercept criminals and speed up the removal of those who have no legal right to be in the UK."
Neither Instagram nor TikTok removed the two brothers' accounts, but both removed other content highlighted by Express.
Instagram owners Meta also declined a request for an interview with its President of Global Affairs, former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Nick Clegg.
A spokesperson for Meta said that “buying, selling or searching for drugs is not allowed on our platforms; our teams use a mix of technology and human review to remove this content as quickly as possible and we work with the police and youth organizations to improve detection.
"We've also been working with industry experts to address the issue of people smuggling for several years, and when we find content that coordinates this illegal activity, we remove it from our platforms."
TikTok also declined Express's request to interview a spokesperson and said in a statement: "TikTok is working closely with UK law enforcement, the National Crime Agency and organizations such as STOP THE TRAFFIC to combat this issue nationwide. industry and our unwavering efforts helped reduce the number of small boat crossings last year, according to border officials.
"We continue to strictly maintain a zero-tolerance approach to human exploitation and proactively find over 95% of the content we remove for violating these rules."
Alex and Dor Visha have been contacted for comment.
