Beans, potatoes and chicken, with the highest price increases in 2024

A detailed list of 44 basket items, dominated by food, shows that between January 2024 and January 2025, prices in most of them increased more than the average inflation of 2.1% last year.

INSTAT data shows that the largest price increase in January 2025 compared to January 2024 was for lemons with 42% more, beans with 37.5%, chicken with 24.4%, potatoes with 13.1%, olives with 12.2%, beef with 8.6%, etc.

A kilogram of beans cost an average of 317 lekë in January 2025 from 230 lekë in the same month of 2024. While a kilogram of chicken cost 596 lekë from 479 lekë in January 2024 (see chart below).

Vegetables and dairy products also grew at rates twice as high as inflation. In January 2025, a kilogram of tomatoes cost an average of 177.6 lek, 5.2% more than in January 2024, while a kilogram of cucumbers cost 184 lek, or 6.3% more than in January 2024.

On the other hand, the 10 main items of the basket recorded a decrease in prices between 2024 and 2025. In January of this year, a kg of pepper cost 14.5% cheaper than in January 2024, dried onions 13.2% cheaper, apples -13%, Gasoline -1.4%, Oil -8.1%, Gas -5.8%, Sunflower Oil -5.7%, etc. (see chart below).

The prices of basket products experience strong fluctuations in short periods of time due to factors related to production yield, lack of information on market demand, etc.

In years when there is a shortage of production and prices increase for a product, e.g. onions, farmers tend to plant more the following year, creating oversupply and low prices for the following season.

Price performance in the last decade shows strong fluctuations from year to year depending on the yield of agricultural crops.

In recent years, as export demand is increasing and domestic consumption is also expanding due to the high number of tourists, domestic agricultural production is declining.

The aging of the rural population, the lack of financial support for farmers, and the high emigration of young people from rural areas are leading to a decline in production and an increase in prices for most agricultural products.

According to official data, agricultural production fell for the third consecutive year, although Albania is competitive in the Region for early production due to its favorable geographical position as a Mediterranean country with a warm climate./ Monitor.al
