The Minister of State of Greece, Stavros Papastavrou, held a meeting today with the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, who is in prison.
The meeting took place in the prison of Durrës, where Beleri has been for 6 months, while this visit comes in the function of the court that will be held tomorrow, to once again express support for him.
Beleri was arrested two days before the May 14 local elections, becoming the only candidate in Albania to be elected to public office while in prison.
The prosecution accuses Beler of "active corruption in the elections", claiming that it has proven beyond any doubt that he had offered a police associate 50 euros for every vote he could find in his favor as mayor of Himara. His accomplice, Pandeli Kokaveshi, is accused of the same criminal act.
