Hungarian Foreign Minister: The EU is losing weight, the enlargement procedure

Péter Szijjarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, which also holds the next presidency of the EU, has spoken about the opening of the first group chapters of Albania.

In the press conference with Prime Minister Rama, the Hungarian minister said that the European Union needs freshness as it is losing weight in the global economy, so it is necessary for Albania to join the union.

Szijjarto underlined the need to speed up Albania's expansion and presence, as the duration is reducing credibility.

"Today we talked about the basic chapters as a group. There are 6 that need to be negotiated and we know that the preparatory process is difficult, complex, strong and we know that experience is important. And when the prime minister visited us in Budapest, we agreed that the diplomatic academy of of foreign affairs in Hungary will treat 50 members of the Albanian administration so that they can contribute to the membership procedures.

We understand that the EU is losing its weight when it comes to the global economy, so we understand that the EU needs freshness, a new stimulus. This fresh, new energy that we need will come from the Western Balkans, so it must be accelerated. We need to take urgent steps to maintain credibility for the enlargement policy, we need to understand that this policy has lost credibility. The average waiting time has exceeded 15 years, this is simply inappropriate, we need to speed up the extension procedure now!

Most member states say that enlargement should be a merit-based process, but there are merits. If we were to see the achievements of Albania, the merits are present. Hungarian investors play an important role in the modernization of the Albanian economy. On the other hand, Albania has done very well when it comes to the conditions that the EU has set to be able to open the negotiation chapters. This is becoming a habit on our part because we were in this position with Croatia for 14 and a half years. I hope we don't have to wait until the next presidency. Today we talked about the group of basic chapters, there are 6 chapters that need to be negotiated", declared the Hungarian minister.
