Causes of death in Albania, heart disease leads, suicides increase

During 2024, 22,102 deaths were recorded in Albania, marking an increase of 3.85 compared to 2023.

According to data published by INSTAT, 97.0% of deaths occurred as a result of natural causes. Accidents account for 1.95% of the causes of loss of life in the country, marking a decrease of 0.5 percentage points.

Chronic heart diseases lead the causes of natural deaths with 39.1%, followed by ischemic heart diseases with 23.2% and cerebrovascular diseases with 20.6%.

Next come homicides, which account for 0.2%, a lower figure compared to 2023, which accounted for 0.8% of causes of death.

Suicides have increased from 0.85 in 2023 to 0.9% in 2024. Suicide cases, especially in young age groups, have become a concern.

Regarding mortality by age: for the age group 0-19 years, the group "Diseases that appear in the period around birth" dominates with 30.8%, followed by diseases of the circulatory system with 26.2%; for the age group 20-44 years, traumatic injuries and poisonings account for 28.0%, while diseases of the circulatory system account for 32.7%.
