Murder of businessman Ardian Nikulaj, Portuguese Ruben Saraiva sent for trial

Ruben Saraiva, a Portuguese citizen, has been sent to trial for the murder of businessman Ardian Nikulaj, who was executed on April 19, 2023 in Shëngjin. The decision to send him to court was given by Judge Renis Sheshi. Saraiva is accused of "intentional murder" and "unlicensed possession of weapons", according to the Albanian Criminal Code.

The court has found that there is sufficient evidence to try the Portuguese for these criminal offenses. Ruben Saraiva was extradited to Albania on December 31, 2023, following a decision by the Moroccan court, which approved the request of the Albanian authorities. Since then, he has been in custody in Tirana awaiting trial.

Four British citizens are also accused of the incident, who are suspected of assisting in the murder, as well as Edmond Haxhia, who is accused of organizing and ordering Nikulaj's execution.

The murder of Ardian Nikulaj is part of a long-running feud between the Nikulaj family and the Lekstakaj tribe, a conflict that has claimed many victims over the years.
