Washington Examiner: FBI leaders should not ignore the Rama-McGonigal scandal
The major American newspaper, the Washington Examiner, calls on FBI directors, Kash Patel and his deputy, Dan Bongino, not to ignore the FBI's biggest scandal, that of Charles McGonigal, who was corrupted by Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama.
"There is compelling evidence that McGonigal was involved in extorting Albanian oligarchs with his friend, Rama, earning millions of dollars," the article states, among other things.
Below is the article by journalist John Schindler
Reforming the so-called “deep state” in America’s intelligence and security apparatus is a key, enthusiastic goal for President Donald Trump’s second administration. But is the Trump team even bothering to understand where the rot lies?
On paper, MAGA’s commitment to rooting out corruption in the “deep state” is clear. This week, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced the creation of the Directors’ Initiative Group to “investigate political weaponization, root out deep politicization, expose unauthorized disclosures of classified intelligence, and declassify information that serves a public interest.”
The GID is also supposed to guide the intelligence community to reduce wasteful spending.
At the FBI, Director Kash Patel, a staunch MAGA supporter, has expressed his commitment to cleansing the bureau of Democratic partisan taints.
Patel recently hailed nothing less than the “complete and total elimination of the political weaponization of justice” under his leadership.
The appointment of popular MAGA podcaster Dan Bongino as Patel’s replacement was taken by Trump loyalists as a sure sign that the FBI would be rigorously purged of corruption. Bongino denounced the bureau as “a completely corrupt organization” during the Biden presidency. Surely the Patel-Bongino duo would fundamentally reform the FBI?
There is room for doubt about this. There is one name noticeably absent from the new leadership's public discussions about reforming the bureau: Charlie McGonigal.
Readers of this column will remember that name because it is attached to the worst FBI scandal in modern times. McGonigal, a top official in the bureau, was discredited and made worse after his 2018 retirement from the FBI when it was revealed that, while serving as the powerful head of counterintelligence in the New York Field Office, a very, very important job in the agency, he slept with a top Kremlin oligarch and shady Albanians. He did it for hard cash.
At the very least, the FBI should conduct a thorough damage assessment of the McGonigal case, going back decades. There are whispers in counterintelligence circles that several classified FBI operations against Russia faltered under McGonigal’s leadership. Was this bad luck, or something worse? Intelligence community sources tell me that the FBI’s entire damage assessment of the case involves a single, part-time agent. If so, that’s ridiculous.
The Albanian aspect is equally troubling. Reports that McGonigal received millions of dollars from the leadership of that NATO narco-state are troubling and demand answers. Moreover, what did the Biden administration, which shielded Rama and his criminal government from scrutiny, know about McGonigal’s nefarious activities in the Balkans?
Above all, did McGonigal recruit aides within the FBI to bolster his blatant corruption and perhaps worse? Do those individuals still serve in the bureau?
If the new FBI leadership is serious about ridding the FBI of corruption, the McGonigal scandal must be rigorously investigated until all those involved in this affair are identified.
We know that the deputy director is aware of McGonigal and his violations. In early 2023, Bongino discussed the case, including its messy Albanian dimension, on his popular podcast.
Strangely, however, that episode has since disappeared from his archive website.
This is not a good sign. If Patel and Bongino are sincere in their tough stances on FBI reform, they cannot continue to cover up the McGonigal case like Biden./ Eye
