What is known so far about the murder of the 19-year-old in Vushtrri?

A 19-year-old man was shot dead by another man on Sunday night in the northeastern Kosovo town of Vushtrri. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and taken into custody, where he is said to have confessed to the crime.

The motives for the murder are not yet known, while authorities said they are conducting ongoing investigations.

The Basic Prosecution Office in Mitrovica has requested the imposition of pre-trial detention for the defendant with the initials BD, on suspicion of committing the criminal offenses of "aggravated murder" and "unauthorized ownership, control or possession of weapons."

"The defendant BD, on March 23, 2025 at around 8:30 p.m. on 'Galip Badivuku' street in Vushtrri, intentionally took the life of the victim with the initials AZ, by shooting and hitting him at least three times in the body with a pistol-type firearm, where the victim died in the Emergency Department of the Vushtrri Hospital as a result of the wounds received from the firearm. The defendant admitted to committing the criminal offense during questioning," the Prosecution said in a statement.

The spokesperson for the Basic Prosecution of Mitrovica, Valon Preteni, told Radio Free Europe that the suspect has been detained for 48 hours on charges of aggravated murder.

Police said they found three shell casings as evidence and confiscated a revolver that was allegedly used by the suspect in the murder.

"A raid was conducted at the suspect's home where a long gun with five (5) rounds of ammunition was also found and confiscated," the Police said.

Preteni said he could not speak about the possible motives for the murder and that ongoing investigations are being conducted.

Kosovo Police, meanwhile, said that they are continuing investigations in cooperation with the prosecutor in the case, to clarify all the circumstances related to the murder case.

The victim's uncle, Nysret Zymeri, told local media that the family does not know the perpetrator and has not had any problems with other people.

"We don't know how it happened. We haven't had any bad things to say to anyone. We haven't had any bad words with anyone alive, we didn't expect it... This happened to us, we received the information last night, we didn't recognize the perpetrator, and we don't recognize him now," he said./rel
