Strong explosion in the lake of Ujman, two cars are damaged

Kosovo police have confirmed that an explosion occurred on Sunday in the northern part of the country, near Lake Ujman.

The deputy director of the Kosovo Police for the northern part, Veton Elshani, told Radio Europe Free that there were no injuries, but only material damage to two cars.

He did not specify exactly what the explosion is about.

Elshani said that the police are dealing with the case.

Citizens of the area have been seen in recent weeks cooling off near the lake, after high temperatures, almost 40 degrees Celsius.

This lake is considered a vital strategic point for Kosovo, as, among other things, it currently supplies water to an area with over 500,000 Kosovars. Seven municipalities, south and north of the Ibër river, are supplied with water from Ujman; South and North Mitrovica, Zveçani, Vushtrri, Gllogoci, Skenderaj and a part of Pristina.

Apart from them, the thermal power plants Kosova A and B, Trepça and Ferroniceli depend entirely on the supply of water from this artificial lake. Likewise, 32 Megawatts (MW) of electricity are produced in the Vallaçi hydropower plant.

The Iber River, which fills Ujman with water, originates in Montenegro, then passes through the territory of Serbia, enters Kosovo with a length of 82 km, and returns to Serbia./ REL
