Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj was arrested yesterday at the municipality's premises, several months after SPAK had launched investigations against him. Veliaj is officially accused of the criminal offenses of passive corruption and money laundering.

Although Veliaj is officially accused of stealing 86 million lek spent on luxury goods, clothing and jewelry, many Albanian artists and VIPs have come out in support of the mayor.

From singers, to actors and journalists, the messages in Veliaj's post are numerous.

What is striking is that these are the same artists who supported him in the May 14 campaign, during the local elections. The same artists who distributed food to senior centers and sold it as an achievement of the mayor.
