Fact and fiction are royally blurred in the Emmy Award-winning series that premiered its fifth season on Netflix today.

The arrival of The Crown's fifth season couldn't come at a more controversial time. Shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the ascension of her son Charles to the throne, Netflix has been accused of showing people a show that is not only insensitive to historical accuracy, but also damages the reputation of the monarchy. But should viewers think of the series as a work of fiction? To cut it short: no.

Although "The Crown" is clearly based on real events involving the monarchy — specifically the various scandals and rumors that have engulfed the royal family over the years, from the controversial marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana to Prince Philip's alleged infidelity — the people who stand after the show that won the Emmy award, they made it clear that it is also a work of "fiction" (so there are some events that are not true).
