Here's what numbness in your limbs says about your health

Numbness is the feeling when you can hardly feel anything in a part of your body. Many times we describe this sensation as "pins and needles" in the skin, often in the hands or feet. What are the causes of numbness in the extremities?

Pressure: Tight shoes or sitting can cause numbness or 'pins and needles'. The problem goes away when the pressure is reduced.

Trapped nerves: A disc disease or back problem can put pressure on a nerve that starts in the spine, runs down the leg and into the toes. A blocked nerve in the neck can also cause numbness anywhere from the neck to the hands and fingers.

Diabetes: Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels that supply the nerves in the fingers and toes.

Alcohol: Drinking too much alcohol can damage the nerves.

Vitamin deficiency: Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in very old people, vegetarians and people with pernicious anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes anemia and nerve damage.
