After the alarm from doctors, TikTok will not allow body tanning videos

TikTok has announced it will ban videos promoting body tanning and add educational content after an alarm from Australian experts over pro-body tanning posts. In September, the leaders of Melanoma Institute Australia (skin cancer institute), Prof. Georgina Long and Prof. Richard Scolyer spoke openly about the dangers of TikTok posts and trends that promote body tanning, such as the #sunburnchallenge.

Posts encouraging people to post bodies with sun signs had more than 200 million views. TikTok announced that it has launched a campaign aimed at educating users. In each body tanning photo/video, an informational poster will be displayed about the dangers of these practices.

The campaign, which aims to impact 20- to 39-year-olds, will also remove "disturbing content" related to "dangerous" tanning activities, including the hashtag #sunburnchallenge, which has more than 8.4 million worldwide views. This trend encourages people to post videos of their body getting sunburned, with blisters, visible lines on the skin, etc.

Melanoma is the deadliest skin cancer. The rate of diagnosis of the disease has increased dramatically over the past three decades, surpassing almost all other types of cancer. Unprotected sun exposure is one of the main causes of skin cancer.
