Brussels urges EU members to reinstate anti-Covid restrictions on US travelers

Brussels has recommended that EU members reinstate restrictions on US travelers entering their countries.

The decision comes after the Delta variant has increased the numbers of infections and hospitalizations. The US is now registering more than 1,000 new cases a day, the highest level since March.

The US vaccination campaign has stalled in recent months. More than 57% of the EU population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, compared to 52% in the United States.

The national representatives met on Monday afternoon to discuss and update the EU safe travel list, a process that takes place every two weeks.

The Council of the European Union decided to remove six countries from the list (Israel, Kosovo, Lebanon, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and the United States), arguing that their current rate of coronavirus infections exceeds the agreed 75 cases threshold. new per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days.

The United States was first included in the safe list on June 18. The involvement was followed by weeks of intense lobbying by European officials who pressured their American counterparts to respond and open their doors to EU citizens.

The White House stood firm and refused to allow entry as vaccinated American tourists entered Europe to enjoy their summer vacation.

Despite the rapid spread of the Delta variant worldwide, a small group of countries remain on the EU safe list: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei, Canada, Japan, Jordan, New Zealand , Qatar, Moldova, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Ukraine.

China is also involved, although this is subject to reciprocity. The regions of Hong Kong and Macao are also listed in green.
